Still working on A Little Lily Princess, thought it was worth mentioning since I almost never post on this poor old blog ever since Google broke the interface to make it more of a pain to use.
And now there's rumblings that twitter is intending to break itself so who knows where I'll be posting in the future!

White Gloves At The Ready
The 1.1 update for Black Closet is out, bringing with it a whole second set of artwork and new CGs to unlock.
If you liked the old style, that's fine, it's still there, but now you can choose between them:
Another useful new feature that we've added is the "suspend game" option. For balance reasons, you can only make permanent saves at the start of every week, which can be inconvenient if you suddenly need to stop playing in the middle of the week. Now you can quit the game at any point and you'll be given the option to suspend your session. A suspended game will automatically resume the next time you launch the program.
And another thing that some people have been waiting for - details on how to get a discount by playing the demo!
More information, screenshots of the new artwork, and download links for the new demo versions available at the Black Closet webpage.
Please let us know if you run into any problems!

Little Witches
edit: This post now semi-irrelevant because they apparently are using the PS2 graphics, so yes, all the art has been redrawn. That's a lot of redrawn, but it's already done.
And the second issue, that of people getting confused about what kind of game it is - it's unfortunately too late for that, with all the other "all ages" games hitting Steam and creating exactly the sort of thing I was talking about, customers who didn't want porn games being referred to porn games and customers who DID want porn mistakenly thinking every game has a secret porn version that's being denied to them. Ugh.
On the bright side, it hasn't yet created any legal problems, that I know of...

WARNING: somewhat NSFW - no actual nudity but suggestive graphics ahead!
tl;dr - I like the game but don't think an "all ages" release is a good plan
So, I've been spending a lot of time the past few days playing with Littlewitch Romanesque. On balance I'd say I enjoy it, there's a lot to like, and I'm mostly good with the art style. Some people pick on the faces, I'm occasionally bothered by those long torsos, but overall it's fine. Gameplay-wise, there are some things I think they've done well and I want to learn and steal from, and some things I think they've done poorly and should be avoided. But a mixed response is good, it means I would never be tempted to clone it exactly.
Unfortunately, after playing through the game and getting a couple of endings, I have to say that I am no longer in favor of the Greenlight campaign. Even if you remove all the explicit graphics (and you can't remove all the h-scenes without breaking the plot, so I guess a lot of black screens would be involved?). Originally I thought it was just going to be a raising sim with romantic endings and that one character whose design is going to raise some eyebrows.
After all, I've seen some moral crusaders denouncing Princess Maker as "filthy pedobait" because of a few optional bits added on. I figured this was the same thing.
It's... really not.
Over and over and over again, the learning of spells turns into an excuse for another wacky scene in which you see your (clearly underage) students either naked or in their underwear. "Oh, look, I learned a water spell and now I'm wet so I must raise my skirts to wring them out! Oh, look, I learned a fire spell and set my dress on fire so I have to take it off! Oh, look, I learned a spell to walk through walls and now I'm stuck halfway-through with my panty-clad butt in the air and everyone is poking it!" Many of these have unique CGs. Every spell learned has a little scene that plays after it. They're not all naughty, but a LOT of them are.
EVEN IF you cut out all the h-scenes and all the plotlines relating to sex and all the spell-learning scenes (and frankly we are running out of game at this point), the very spell cards themselves are often extremely suggestive. Several have nudity, usually undetailed but occasionally very clear, even to nipples. Some have panty shots. Some have art that...
... yeah.
Basically, this is exactly the sort of thing the anti-anime crowds accuse anime games of being. It is absolutely, totally, wholeheartedly a game about doing naughty things with little girls. It is not possible to censor this game enough to remove that and have any game left whatsoever.
Now, I don't object to the game. I bought it as an 18+ game. I knew exactly what I was getting into.
I object to the idea of selling ANY version of this game as an "all ages" title. It isn't, it never was, and trying to sell it as if it's just Princess Maker or Long Live The Queen is doing a disservice to the customers, the game, and the industry as a whole.
Customers will be misled and upset that they did not get the cute, harmless raising sim that they were advertised.
The game will be butchered - I have no idea how much content they think they're going to chop out of this, but even just removing the h-scenes will leave a lot of holes.
Everyone who makes and sells anime-styled games may face setbacks and backlash.
There will be a shitstorm.
Please, JAST, if you're reading this, DO NOT market this as "All Ages". If you must sell this title on Steam, label it as what it is - a game primarily about fanservice. EVEN IF you've removed all the sex graphics. AGE GATE THIS.

Leading Ladies
Interested in some different approaches to narrative in video games? Check out this week's Humble Weekly Bundle, which is dedicated to female protagonists (sort of) and features adventure games and stat-sim/VN style games as well.
Why 'sort of'? Well, The Yawhg lets you choose an avatar, so it's not necessarily female or a focused, detailed character, and Valdis Story (may possibly? I've heard conflicting reports) only lets you unlock a playable female character after you've beaten the game once. Details, details... but I try to be clear with you!
This week's bundle is also backing Girls Make Games, so your purchase helps fund scholarships in game development.

Long Live The Queen on Steam!
It's finally out! Click there to go get the game - it's on discount for launch week.
If you haven't been keeping up with development/beta, there's a bunch of new content that's been added in for the Steam launch, including some new characters and a set of graphics for the epilogues. And yes, as requested, there are trading cards, so you can collect all the deaths.
But don't listen to me talk about it, go explore!
... can I sleep yet?

As You Wish
As part of our ongoing campaign to conquer Greenlight (and then, THE WORLD) we have commissioned an awesome new trailer for Long Live The Queen:
(If you can't see that because of blogfeed, link to the trailer here)
The campaign has passed 11,000 yes votes and is still going, slow but steady, so all hope is not lost! We also got a bit of coverage on Rock Paper Shotgun, even if they did (hopefully accidentally!) end up somewhat referencing a hentai game in the title... Don't look it up, spare your innocent eyes!

Rule The World Or Die Trying - Long Live The Queen!
Our newest release - a deceptively cute, pink, sparkly sim game about being repeatedly killed in as many ways as possible.

Basically, you're this fourteen-year-old princess who's just inherited the throne because the last queen (your mother) died under mysterious circumstances. So you're frantically trying to learn how to manage a country, while all around you EVERYTHING IS TRYING TO KILL YOU in order to get power for themselves. Evil relatives, invasions, civil war, uprisings, assassinations, feuds, eldritch abominations...
... no, I'm not kidding about that last one either.
Juggle a huge pile of stats and make decisions that you can't possibly know the consequences of and then watch them loop around and bite you in the back. And die. And start over again with a better plan.
Also, the outfits are adorable. But don't be fooled into buying this for any very young kids, you'll scar them for life.
Available for PC, Mac, and Linux. Click below for the free demos.

What's an RPG?
Sure, this subject has been covered a couple of times - look here and here for starters. But there's often a magical 'look and feel' element that leads people to decide that one game is an RPG and another game isn't.
So. Is Long Live The Queen an RPG?
My initial reaction was to say no. After all, while Princess Maker 2 is generally considered "part RPG", the later games in the PM series are classed as pure raising sims.
But by almost any sufficiently general description of RPGs, a raising sim is going to fall quite close to being accepted. After all, you are guiding the development of a character. You are making consequential choices. Your success in the game is determined by the character's stats, not the player's twitch skills. There's even that little element of dice-rolling in most of them, where you MIGHT succeed in raising your stats or you might fail (usually based on stress). The only spot where it falls out is that in a classic raising sim you are not supposed to identify with the avatar so much as to be 'guiding' it. Your daughter in Princess Maker can decide to be a brat and run off and do things without your input. She's not "you", she's your CHILD.
And that's the element that I'm always throwing out and going straight for "you are the character".
Another suspicious wait-maybe-this-is-an-RPG-after-all moment: If the ongoing plot of LLTQ were written in gamebook format, you would need a character sheet to play it. Your character skills are absolutely crucial at all times to what text you see, what options you have, how your choices turn out. You even have, to some extent, an inventory of items that boost your stats. And if you're playing through an adventure with a character sheet and inventory, it becomes harder to argue that this isn't, in fact, some kind of RPG.
Why did I initially say it wasn't? Or at least, that it doesn't fall into the standard CRPG genre? Because there's no blow-by-blow combat. There is combat, under some circumstances. You have skills in weapons and magic, and they will get used. But it happens in a narrative way, quickly resolved, without dice-rolling. (There is no randomness at any point in LLTQ. Skills are compared as flat values. Under some definitions this may disqualify it as an RPG.)
I suspect people who are looking for CRPGs probably have certain things in their mind that are important, and I expect that lack of crunchy combat to be a big turnoff for them. Therefore, I don't want to advertise the game as an RPG - even though it may be - because I don't want to deal with that conflict of expectations.
On the other hand if I decided to IGF this at the end of the year, I think I could describe it as "experimental RPG" and make a decent argument... What do you think?

Magical Diary - A Victory for Evil?
So, at the end of Magical Diary, players have the option to upload their character to the Online Yearbook to display to others.
This also means we have a record of play distribution. Obviously this won't cover ALL players, only those who choose to upload their characters, and therefore, the statistics may be off. But it's still interesting to look at. We have five romanceable characters, and four of those have two ending possibilities, Romance or Friendship. It's also possible to end up alone, either through not starting a path or through screwing one up midway through.
Of the ~900 current uploads:
14% ended alone.
5% were Virginia Romance.
2% were Virginia Friendship.
9% were Ellen Romance.
3% were Ellen Friendship.
16% were Grabiner Romance.
2% were Grabiner Friendship.
20% were Donald Romance.
3% were Donald Friendship.
and finally...
24% were Damien Romance.
While it's slightly tricky to be sure from the records, I expect quite a lot of the 'end alone' were people on Damien's path, too.
So there you have it, mathematical proof that people still prefer the bad boys. :) (To be fair, the game does sort of steer you in his direction for your first playthrough.)
(as for the missing 2%, blame rounding.)

Long Live the Queen
At last, we have a few clothing items finished so I can show you a picture of the princess for our ruling sim Long Live The Queen!

She's not always that sad, of course, her mood changes based on events and the activities the player chooses. But she does start off sad, since after all, a tragedy in the family has just happened in order for her to be put on the throne at such a young age.
Elodie's mood affects how she learns skills - she's eager to learn Conversation skills when she's Lonely, but terrible at handling Weapons when she's Afraid. You'll have to manage her emotions in order to maximise skill gain.
This is not a huge sprawling epic with heavy character interaction or an RPG; it's a number-crunching sim where things will probably go terribly wrong on your first few playthroughs, so just keep trying until you manage something resembling happily ever after :)

Magical Diary Trailer
My first try at doing a trailer (not OP) style video for the game:
Magical Diary Trailer 1 video - Indie DB
If you can't see the embed, click the link to go to the page that contains it. There's also a youtube version if THAT doesn't work for you, let me know. (And yes, I downgraded to FF3.6 because I was THAT SICK of the problems I was having with ff4 and url insertion.)
Have not yet posted images of the game boxes on the Magical Diary webpage (not dealing with the webpage much until we are out of beta) but you can get a peek at the current design here:

priorities
I've been playing Academagia slightly obsessively lately, catching up with the latest content, and wondering if I should make use of illegal mind-control magic to try and get the two nerdy girls to stop fighting so I can keep them both in my clique and RULE THE WORLD.
... well, not actual illegal mind-control magic, not on this particular character who hasn't managed to learn it. But she has got amazingly good powers of (wait for it) calligraphy. So good, that there is a slim chance she can write people instructions that look so polished and professional that they will reflexively obey.
See, there are two very nerdy girls with similar special powers, and perhaps to prevent you from powergaming too much, they can't stand each other. I had them both in my clique early on, but then they started fighting and ever since if I try to befriend them both, my entire clique immediately implodes and they BOTH stomp off. I no longer need their special powers this late in the game, I simply have a vague desire to find out if it's possible to get them patched up. Many ridiculous things are possible! But there are a lot more skills in the game to make people hate each other than to make them like each other - you can make them like YOU but that doesn't help with this situation. However, if I used mind control (or, um, calligraphy) to seize control of one of them, MAYBE I could then make them be friendly to each other...
EDIT: Apparently not, sadly - I can seize control of one and tell her to be friendly in general, but I STILL can't seem to make her be friendly with who I want her to be friendly with. Even with mind-control powers! Alas.

The Making of Mages - Magical School Sim
No, this is not the one I'm working on, but it is something that Cute Knight fans should find interesting!
Academagia
You're a young student (either male or female) just starting out at a fancy magical school. That much is certain. EVERYTHING ELSE is up in the air. Are you from a poor family or a rich one? Born under a lucky star? Been clumsy all your life? Have a cat for a familiar? Make friends easily? Tend to accidentally get into trouble all the time?

You can set ALL these details for your background before you've even started your first day at school. Then once school starts, you'll have multiple events to schedule for every single day, eighty other students to interact with, and literally HUNDREDS of random events that you might encounter and which might go well or badly.

Skip class? You might find your way to a magical artifact hidden in a cave on the school grounds, or you might just annoy the teachers and end up in detention for the rest of your life. It is astoundingly complicated and no two playthroughs will be alike. (There's a wiki being built by players to share the secrets they've encoutnered so far!)

If you enjoy building different characters in Cute Knight this should keep you busy for a loooong time. :) You can order the game here (Windows Only).
(This is not a 'traditional' visual novel - no anime characters, no standup talking sprites. It is mostly text, but there are some pictures. If you do not like reading this is not a game for you.)
