wow, way to suck, 5th cell

Assuming this is accurate:

And I hate hate HATE the backstory. There’s a backstory now. The games never needed plot before, but apparently Fifth Cell decided what this game REALLY needed was a damsel in distress story to drive the so-called action. Maxwell now has a twin sister who will slowly turn into a rock if he doesn’t collect enough starites. Her only jobs are to narrate the opening (vicious waste of your Jennifer Hale, here) and stand in one place looking sad.

I’m told if you find 60 starites, you unlock Lily as an avatar. In the meantime, I can unlock and play ANY ONE of Maxwell and Lily’s forty brothers!

Forty. BROTHERS.

….Screw you, Fifth Cell.

... I now regret having bought as many of their games as I have. What the hell.

Yes, I do resent paper-thin damsel-in-distress stories. I do not hate all damsel-in-distress stories, particularly if there's an actual STORY. But a game which doesn't need a plot and then slaps "save the girl" on it for no reason, I feel like they're either making some weird assumptions about their players or actively trying to send a message.

the floor is not always your friend

... but I like leading Bob to a horrible doom!

I think it's a student IGF game? Dunno. There's a browser playable version at least, and it's all very Surreal Art entertainment. The 'sleep' bit before each level is too long though IMO.

Go back to bed.

NONSTOP KIRBY

I've only had this game for like a day or two and I'm probably going to have maxed out all stars within the week I can't help it I love Kirby.

It does seem a little on the easy side even for a Kirby game but who cares, KIRBY.

(It's Squeak Squad I'm playing at the moment.)

where did that come from

Apparently there's a PC version of scribblenauts now? Although their website didn't want to tell me it existed and was only pushing WiiU (not bloody likely considering the day one bricking) and 3DS (obviously no, not until they drop the region-lock) at me.

It's sad when people searching for pirate copies and thus tripping some of my flags do a better job of advertising than the actual sales team...

marketing fail

So I spotted a potentially interesting new game on DLsite (not H).

The description says it's a physics-based puzzle sim. Sounds fun! But... what is it? There's no demo version. Of the three posted screenshots, one is just a title screen image, nothing to do with the gameplay. One is a picture of the back of the BOX (many doujin games sell at least a handful of box copies) with screenshots too small to make out gameplay details. Only the third lets you see anything about what the game looks like to play... and with so little information it would be a huge gamble to assume that it even RUNS on English windows, much less is comprehensible to people who can't read Japanese.

And for all that, it's got a highish price for a doujin title. Certainly not unreasonable, there are plenty of games on DLsite for $20, but it's not the STANDARD price. Most things are cheaper.

Unsurprisingly it's not selling any copies on the English side. (Okay, the majority of stuff doesn't sell on the English side, because, well, it's not in English. But still.)

... Of course, the next thing I click on is a downloadable set of speech bubbles. For $50. Good luck, you'll need it.

The Man With Invisible Trousers

I mentioned it on twitter but it's worth saying again, I am enjoying the style of this game. Noir detective platformer with weird physics (you can walk up walls as long as there's a curve, and gravity is wherever you are oriented) an apparently dynamic plot to keep things interesting, and invisible legs to keep you on your unseen toes while figuring out jumps.

alas

With vague disappointment I picked up the game again and finished all the normal levels of Super Scribblenauts, feeling very much that I was playing an educational game for kids rather than anything exciting to explore.

The only time it actually surprised me was when I made a 'fishy' tank that turned blue and scaly and wandered around on its own.

shrinkproof??

... after I carefully created a witch and gave her a shrink gun, it turns out the PC is now IMMUNE to shrinking??? Why???

scribbling

Super Scribblenauts seems awfully easy... I'm not really being drawn into it as much as I'd like. I'm afraid I'm going to run out of levels within a week of getting it.

scribblenauts 2 words of fail

whelk (mentioned earlier)
skein
It acknowledges 'honeysuckle' as a word, but it creates a featureless lump instead of what it should be.

On the bright side, cesium now explodes when it hits water.

i've only barely begun, but so far my most irritated complaint about a word not in the dictionary: whelk

Nyxquest

Cool-looking platformer that's made its way from WiiWare to Mac/PC. I haven't tried it yet (I expect my current computer may not be able to run it) but worth peeking at:

sale

While the sequel is due out (sometime soonish), gamestop online has the original scribblenauts on sale for the rest of the month. If for some reason you haven't played it, seems like an appropriate time?

rushing to your DOOM

Servers apparently got hammered so I've made no attempt to PLAY this yet, but watching the video is rather amusing...

squeeing for squeeing's sake

waiting for the Scribblenauts Sequel..

For example: someone left a "Giant Bear" onscreen in a previous demo, and I dispatched it with a "Poisonous Fish." Then, based on advice from 5TH Cell's Marius Fahlbusch and Jeremiah Slaczka, I made a potion to impart an adjective on the bear corpse -- in this case, a "Flat Potion," which did indeed lead to a "Flat Poisoned Bear." Then, for good measure, I dropped a "Nervous Library" on top of the bear. The library danced back and forth awkwardly. But, of course, you've all seen a nervous library before.
